Let’s Get Real About Recycling

The theme of this year’s Recycling Week is ‘Let’s Get Real’ and will challenge perceptions and myths around recycling, and target contamination to improve recycling behaviours.

To coincide with this important week, we’re sharing some top recycling tips that are easy to integrate and will really make a difference.

  • Don’t bag your recyclables as they will be considered as general waste, regardless of the contents. Instead, put them loosely directly into your blue bin.

  • Recycle for charity. Mobile phones, computer equipment, printer cartridges can all be recycled and can raise money for charity - win, win!

  • Use canvas bags instead of plastic grocery bags. Plastic bags dissolve into potentially harmful microplastics and can also hurt and kill animals if ingested or if they become entangled in them.

  • Flatten cardboard boxes so you can fit more into your recycling bin.

  • Small, loose pieces of tinfoil will not be recycled. So, always scrunch it up into balls and keep adding to it until it’s about the size of a tennis ball, then recycle it!

  • Food contaminated paper packaging cannot be recycled and should either be composted or put into your general waste.

We hope these tips will be thought provoking and help you to make some positive recycling changes.
